I have come to the conclusion through careful analysis and personal experience that many of the negative events throughout history and negative emotions in humans are caused by one single emotion: Fear. Fear that runs rampant leads to panic, which leads to other emotions such as greed, anger, depression, hopelessness, jealousy, and envy, which in turn lead people to act on the extreme. Examples are man’s tendency to always try to dominate nature and resort to violence…all out of the basic need to protect themselves. As I was sitting in lecture right now, I realized that the channelizing of the L.A. River and the exploitation of the Owens Lake and Valley through the L.A. Aqueduct was also born out of fear. If we, as humans, could somehow just conquer that fear in a more constructive way, things would have been, and still could be, so much better.
