While utilizing parametric algorithms to create patterns on the landscape would have never occurred to me as a way to approach making land forms, this quarter has been a valuable learning experience for exploring this alternative method for design. Through the combination of more intuitive ways of navigating the issues surrounding a site and taking more systematic/mathematical courses of action, we can develop a more extensive understanding of a site. Thinking through these different approaches can give us insight into different aspects and things that we wouldn’t have otherwise discovered, making the process of design a more in depth exploration of ourselves and how we may relate to a landscape and what that site ultimately means in the context of the larger landscape. Although the development of parametric algorithms was somewhat frustrating, there are elements of my overall design that wouldn’t have played out had I not spent time in this part of the design process.
